Charleston Custom Home Builder Old Village

Friend Street, Old Village Historic District, Mt. Pleasant, SC

This beautiful 3,540 square foot, 4 bedroom 4.5 bathroom charming home in the Old Village Historic District of Mt. Pleasant, SC is a unique design-build collaboration with Alan Smith Architects, who is also the owner/client. Fitting all of the owner's desired ideas and designs onto a tight site in addition to adhering to the OVHDC's strict guidelines meant a lot of close coordination with the Town of Mt. Pleasant and with the Old Village Historic Commission. Fortunately, with Sea Island Builders serving as a consultant, we were able to successfully navigate the OVHDC and obtain our Certificate Of Appropriateness on the first pass. Prior to the start of construction, the existing home was demolished paving the way for the construction of this beautifully designed and well built home, the construction of which was completed on schedule in less than a year.

Because the client splits time between here and Virginia, it was important to select materials that are designed for low maintenance and ease of use, in addition to keeping with the character of the neighborhood. The home is outfitted with ship lap walls and rough-hewn white oak flooring throughout. Leathered Carrera marble counter tops can be found in the kitchen, bar and master bathroom. A separate wet bar also includes a hidden wine storage cleverly utilizing space under the main staircase. The rooms are large and designed with maximum flexibility of use. No expense was spared or detail overlooked when it came to the design of this lovely Old Village masterpiece. With over 400 SF of storage tucked into all the nooks and crannies, we made the best use of all the available space on this project.

The backyard and pool area is a cleverly designed hidden oasis, with one pool wall also doubling as a retaining and privacy wall for a tasteful way to disguise the contours on this lot, while providing an added layer of protection from the neighbors to provide maximum enjoyment of the outdoor living and entertaining areas. The site plan includes a detached garage, as well as a golf cart storage garage, which was cleverly designed and positioned to provide additional privacy for the backyard and pool area. From inside the yard, you are well insulated from the traffic and street noise of the adjacent streets.

Sea Island Builders is very grateful for such a successful collaboration with Alan Smith Architect on this award-winning project. We are currently working on future projects with Alan Smith and look forward to making other clients as equally satisfied by providing great design, and a seamless design-build experience.
